Located an hour south of Atlanta and named for the country estate of the wife of General Marquis de Lafayette, who visited the region in 1825, before it was incorporated in 1828. The economy of LaGrange was then based on cotton farming. In the late 19th century, LaGrange developed as a railroad center and as an industrial center. LaGrange continued to develop with the completion of Interstates 85 and 185.
Descendants of the Callaway family, established a philanthropic foundation. They have and continue to invest in the city, and contribute to developing important cultural elements of the city. As a result, LaGrange has amenities not usually found in a city of its size. These include “three art galleries, a symphony orchestra, a ballet company, an opera company, an airport, a television station, an archives, two colleges (LaGrange College and West Georgia Technical College), and thirteen recreational centers with facilities for every sport.” Home to one of the state’s largest and most popular lakes, West Point Lake completed in 1975,attracts fishermen from across the southeast. During the summer months you will find families enjoying the lake skiing, tubing or jet skiing. LaGrange has a thriving arts scene, with music, arts and popular restaurants and breweries in downtown and in the Hillside community.
